Joyce paints the plants and colours of bush medicine. Found in the bush and hills sorrounding Papunya, bush medicine is ground up, boiled or made into a paste to heal all manner of ailments. Older ladies in the community pass down knowledge about which plants and materials to use and the techniques to source the medicine within the plants. Techniques to extract the medicine can be complex and can take many days to process. This medicine is special to the Anangu people, and stories about how to find and develop the medicine are shared through these paintings.
