Justin Allen Tjampitjimpa 581-25

Walpa Kurrunpa
acrylic on canvas
51x91cm
This painting depicts the 'wind spirits' (Walpa Kurrunpa). They act as guardians for everybody, providing signs of joy or warning. Wind from each cardinal direction has its own individual purpose and meaning. For instance, the west (tjukarra) is a type of wind that will catch you if you’re alone. It will encourage isolating thoughts in your head. The east wind gives a very happy feeling (palya lingu). “Big wind from the north talking” (walpa tina alinytjarranguru wankanyi) is known for bad weather usually hot and scary. South wind or “walpa warriy wankanyi” is usually cold. It is important to listen to the wind as they not only protect you, they will lead you down the right path. They also carry ancestral stories and memories, always reminding you of the early days and family values. Justin’s expressive gestural representation of these spirits shows the greatness and force of the wind. As he says “Wind gives you energy to grow and live longer. These spirits are with everyone. They can tell you what’s coming.”
